I remember being in spelling bees as early as 3rd grade. That year my teacher gave me a rabbit's foot as a good luck charm and I was grossed out because I hate the feeling of those things. I got out on the word "tomato" because I put an "e" at the end.
When I was in 7th grade I won my school spelling bee and went on to the district bee. I was just in it for the... fun, I guess. But there were some hardcore kids competing, hoping to win. One kid spelled a word wrong and was sobbing because he was so upset. I got out on "forensic" - I had never heard the word before and guessed wrong... I spelled it "phorensic."
Spelling has always been something that has come easily to me, but to this day, my family (well... my dad) still asks me if I can spell "forensic." I'm pretty sure I can never forget!

I was the 5th grade (elementary school went to 5th gr. where I was) champion and represented our school to the city or district spelling bee. I missed the word "parallel". I was so nervous that my mind went blank and traded the double l and single l places!! I KNEW how to spell it!!! Curses!!! I still have to stop and think about how to spell it now, 38 some years later!!! We really are a product of our experiences!!
Glad to know there's a fellow speller in the fam!!!
